He had worked at the Grand Théâtre for 40 years as an assistant conductor and subsequently at the Théâtre l’Alcazar as a conductor of the orchestras and the Folies bordelaise in Bordeaux. No doubt the passion for music came into him from his family as his father was a famous music teacher.
In his teenage, he also learned clarinet, but later switched to the violin in which he was a professional. In his youth days, he learned from violinists Constantin Debergue and Italian-born Ludovico Gabici. He also presented several concerts in New Orleans in 1893.
All of his compositions were of high quality and he was working on producing the composition of a grand opera called Le Sultan d’Ispahan [The Sultan of Spain] which was not completed due to his illness he died in Paris, France in January 5, 1903.
He had also worked as a cigar maker when he returned to the US at the end of 1852 so that he can earn and save some money to be able to travel to Europe. However, he went to Paris first and then Belgium and in 1857 he returned to Paris and started working as an auditor at the Paris Conservatoire.
