In 2019, Mumbai’s Crime Branch exposed a hidden sex trafficking ring operating within a massage center in Vile Parle (East).
The illegal activities were reportedly taking place at Thai Villa Authentic Spa, located in the Rishi building on Dixit Road, a high-end area in Vile Parle (East).
The spa, which opened its doors in 2018 with Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon inaugurating it, is owned by Shura Khan and Sumit Singhania from Shura Leisure Private Limited.
It was alleged that the spa’s owner and managers were involved in running a prostitution ring under the guise of offering Thai massage services.
Following a tip-off, Unit IX of the Crime Branch raided the establishment. During the operation, they rescued six Thai women.
The spa’s manager and owner were arrested and taken to Vile Parle police station. In a talk with the media, an official stated,
“We have confiscated ₹1.23 lakh in cash, a point-of-sale terminal for swiping credit and debit cards, numerous packets of condoms, a laptop, three voucher books, and other important documents from the spa….The six rescued women have been handed over to the Vile Parle police for further investigation. All of them were on tourist visas and did not have work permits. They will be deported through the Thai consulate after the investigation.”[1]
Shura Khan and Sumit Singhania, the spa’s managers, were charged with human trafficking-related offenses under sections of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act.
