Born on January 2, 2001, Cole Caufield began to skate when he was two years old. He used to play baseball and football and played ice hockey for Stevens Point Area Senior High School. In 2017, he then joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and played for the University of Wisconsin-Madison in November 2017. He made 55 goals in the 2014-15 season and 72 goals in the 2018-19 season.
Caufield was drafted 15th by the Montreal Canadiens in June 2019. He joined the Canadiens’ development camp in the summer of 2019. He played for the Wisconsin Badgers for two years and scored 19 goals and 17 assists by being a part of 36 games. He played 31 games during his sophomore season and scored 30 goals and 52 points. He was the recipient of the Hobey Baker Award in 2021.
The 21-year-old then signed a three-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens in March 2021. He then joined the Laval Rocket and made his debut in April 2021. He made his NHL debut the same year and scored a goal against the Ottawa Senators. He scored three assists during the Stanley Cup Finals in 2021 and was featured in 21 games where he scored four goals alongside eight assists.
He also played in the 2021-22 NHL season and once again played for the Laval Rocket. He rejoined The Canadiens in November of the same year. He won the title of the NHL’s Rookie of the Month in March last year and completed the season with a record of 23 goals. Cole then played his 100th game in December of the same year and played 100 games with 40 goals.
Cole Caufield internationally represented the United States. He was chosen for the World U-17 Hockey Challenge in 2017 and scored six points in seven games at the 2018 IIHF World U-18 Championship. He led the United States toward victory at the Five Nations Cup in 2018. He was chosen to the IIHF World Junior Championship in 2021 where he played seven games.
